Your favourite Easter chocolate as you’ve never seen it before! Cadbury Creme Eggs covered in a crispy, fluffy Vanilla batter and deep fried to gooey, yummy perfection. A sinful treat that should be wrong, but tastes so right!
I know what you’re thinking, deep frying chocolate is an abomination, it shouldn’t be done and I’m messing with the laws of physics and biology. But OMG! It’s so ridiculously good, it shouldn’t be, but it really is! You’re gonna have to trust me on this one, try it and you’ll see what I mean. So, won’t you join me in this godless adventure? After all, it’s so much more delicious on the dark side!
I had this idea when I was trying to think of an Easter dessert featuring Creme Eggs that I haven’t seen a million times before (not that that makes Creme Egg brownies any less delicious, please keep making them everybody, my foodie eyes need them!). I have no idea why deep frying them was the idea that I settled on, I don’t pretend to understand my brain! But we’ve all heard of deep fried Mars Bars and I’ve always wanted to try one, despite how wrong it sounded. And if it works for Mars Bars, why not Creme Eggs? So I sold my soul to the deep frying devil and got started!
It starts with freezing the Creme Eggs, this is very important unless you want chocolate to basically explode into your pot of scolding hot oil! The longer you freeze them, the better – I only froze mine for 3 hours and it worked, but there were a few little explosions. Freezing also helps the batter stick to the chocolate. The batter is really simple to make, it’s sweet and fluffy – just the kind of batter you want for this kind of recipe. I like to leave it to sit for an hour or so after mixing to give the baking soda chance to bubble up, but this isn’t necessary. You want to mix this batter properly, but don’t over-mix or it won’t puff up as much. I don’t own a deep fryer so I use a large saucepan to fry, it’s a little harder to keep the temperature steady but it works just fine – if you have a fryer use that of course, but don’t worry if you won’t (a candy thermometer will come in very handy though!). I served mine with a warm chocolate syrup, which isn’t necessary but I’m always of the belief that more chocolate is always better! This is the recipe I generally use, it’s easy and tasty and you can make it in big batches so you have some in the fridge whenever you need it!

- 1 egg
- 110g plain flour (all purpose)
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp bicarb (baking powder)
- 120ml (1/2 cup) buttermilk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 10 creme eggs, unwrapped and frozen
- Icing sugar (powdered/confectioners) to serve
- Chocolate syrup, to serve (optional)
- Oil for frying (enough so it's at least 4 inches deep on your fryer/pan)
- KItchen roll
- Mix all the ingredients for the batter in a large bowl until smooth. Leave covered at room temperature while you prepare the oil.
- Heat the oil to 180C/360F
- Put the frozen Creme Eggs in the batter and use a spoon or fork to help get them completely covered.
- Line a large plate or board with a couple of layers of kitchen towel.
- Use kitchen tongs or a metal slotted spoon to remove the eggs from the batter and very carefully drop into the hot oil. Fry for approximately three minutes, until a deep golden brown.
- You can do two or three at a time, but it's best to do them in small batches so the oil doesn't cool down (you'll end up with greasy batter if it's not hot enough!).
- Remove the deep fried creme eggs from the oil and place on the kitchen towel lined plate (this helps soak up some of the excess oil).
- Transfer them to your serving plate, dust with icing sugar and drizzle with chocolate syrup if using.
- Serve immediately.
Recipe can be doubled or halved as needed
This is definitely not one for the light hearted, and certainly not something I’d recommend making every day unless you want to be having bypass surgery in your near future – but as an Easter treat, I say why the hell not!! They’re not the prettiest of desserts, but the good news is they’re never gonna be your centre piece – these little fried balls of delight need to be served almost immediately so just hand them out like you’re working a donut stand and be the most popular person in the kitchen (just make sure the kids wait patiently outside the kitchen with all that hot oil around!). This is a really quick and easy recipe, the hot oil does scare me a little bit because I’m extremely clumsy but as long as you are careful, you’ll be fine!
