They’re really simple to make, which is handy because everyone will be asking for refills! They’re the perfect cocktail to serve this thanksgiving!
I know a lot of you are probably still lamenting the end of summer, but not me! Summer has it’s advantages; lovely fresh produce, long days, sunshine, and cocktails galore to name a few. But, as much as I love sunshine, I hate the heat. It does not agree with me! The sun may be hibernating more and more as we delve into autumn and the days are already getting much shorter but in return we get crisp air with cooler days and colourful foliage. And we may start saying goodbye to the strawberries and peaches of summer, but we can say a big hello to the blackberries and figs of autumn, and not to mention the absolutely gorgeous, warm spices that dominate this season. Yes, I think it’s safe to say that I am big fan out autumn. Especially because it means I can give my favourite summer cocktail an amazing autumn makeover with these delicious Blackberry, Cinnamon and Fig Margaritas! Yum!
One of my favourite things about autumn in the UK is blackberries! They pop up wildly all over the UK as soon as September hits and it’s like heaven. Blackberry brambles line fields, parks and woods all over. Can you think of anything better than heading out on a crisp autumn day and coming back with tubs full of freshly picked wild blackberries? Every year I end up with more blackberries than I know what to do with, I just can’t resist them! They’ve been the subject of many of my gluten free baking tests, but I have plenty in the freezer still and cocktails were a must! One of my other favourite autumn fruits are figs, there’s a very small window in the UK to grab fresh figs so I have to take advantage as soon as I see them on the fruit stalls. Blackberry and fig make a perfect pair, the tartness of the berries pairs perfectly with the sweetness of fresh figs. And, of course, cinnamon is a must to really make you feel like your sipping on autumn in a glass! Delicious!
These Blackberry, Cinnamon and Fig Margaritas are nice and simple to make. First you need to whip up a batch of blackberry cinnamon syrup, which is super easy and takes about 20 minutes plus cooling time, so you’ll want to make it a bit in advance so you’re not waiting around for it to cool – that’s just torture! Then it’s just a matter of squeezing the limes, muddling the fresh figs and shaking it all up with the booze and syrup. There’s also a brown sugar cinnamon rim, which is technically optional but I totally recommend it, it’s so good! This recipe makes four margaritas and is mixed together in a cocktail shaker. However, you can double the recipe as needed and stir it all up in a pitcher if you have a big crowd to keep refreshed! So let’s get to the recipe and pour ourselves a glass!
These Blackberry, Cinnamon and Fig Margaritas are the perfect fall cocktail, with a delicious blend of sweet, sour and warm spices. They're simple to make and perfect for small gathering or big batches
- 100g (1/2 cup) sugar
- 240ml (1 cup) water
- 160g (1 cup) blackberries
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 6 fresh figs, cut into eighths or slices
- 3 limes, juice (8tbsp/120ml juice)
- 150ml (6oz) gold tequila
- 50ml (2oz) cointreau
- 1 batch of blackberry cinnamon syrup
- Lime wedge
- 1/2 tbsp demerara sugar
- pinch of ground cinnamon
- Put all the syrup ingredients in a small saucepan and stir to combine. Bring to a boil on a medium heat. Reduce heat slightly to a simmer, and simmer for 20 minutes.
- Leave to cool completely, then strain through a fine mesh sieve, using the back of a spoon to squeeze all the juice out of the berries. Set aside.
- Put the fresh figs into a glass or small bowl and muddle to release all the juices. Strain the juice into a cocktail shaker and discard the fig flesh.
- Add the lime juice, tequila and cointreau to the fig juice and shake vigorously 10 times to combine. Add the blackberry cinnamon syrup to the shaker, and gently shake 5 times to combine.
- Combine the demerara sugar and cinnamon in a shallow dish, run a lime wedge around the rim of four tall glasses, then dip the rims in the sugar mixture to coat.
- Fill the glasses with ice and pour the margaritas over the top.
- Add fresh blackberries and fig slices to garnish if desired.
